The Hangzhou Oxygen Factory Transformation project is a key component of the Urban Constellation Master Plan to provide cultural and commercial venues within the confines of heritage industrial facilities. The Hangzhou Oxygen Factory complex was established in the 1950s as one of the first large-scale industrial facilities in the Hangzhou region and expanded over the following decades to one of the largest producers for oxygen concentrator in Asia.
Seven individual factories are to be renovated for the new complex. Though similar typologically, their differences are enhanced to house two museums, cinemas, hotel, event space and showroom. Retail, food & beverage and other commercial types will add diversity of program and valuable revenue for the entire development. Altogether these facilities will activate the existing factory complex and promote a dynamic mix of visitors, both foreign and local.
Each building stands alone but is connected through intervention strategies, spatial adjacencies, common plazas and view axis. Large open spaces specific to the activities form the anchor of each factory. Substantial, full height walls are introduced to subdivide spaces according to programmatic, functional and statutory requirements. Other space-containing walls provide vertical circulation that are functional and playful.
